Berlin Wall 29.08.2025
At midday, we visited the Berlin Wall. There we learned a lot about its history and about how life was for people during that time. We were able to look at the Wall up close and imagine how much it affected everyday life. At the beginning, we took the train to the Wall and then had a guided tour with a woman who explained everything to us about the Wall, the history of the Wall, and the lives of the people who had lived back then. We also visited a memorial for the people who had died, which was very moving. In addition, we looked at the so-called “death strip,” the space between the two walls where people would have been killed if they tried to escape. The way across was very long, so it was impossible to just cross over. Afterwards, we went up to a viewing platform and could see the whole area from above. Finally, we had a very interesting talk with a contemporary witness who had been there when the Wall was built and who later managed to escape. He told us about his experiences, what life was like for him back then, and how he eventually found his way to freedom. His personal story was very moving and made that period of history feel much more real to us.
